MY LEAD PLATFORM: CLIMATE NOW 'What are we waiting for?'

N
ews:
The United Nations General Assembly, on July 28, 2022, adopted a historic resolution, declaring that
'access to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment is a universal human right'.

As a result, the next Mayor and Council must commit to protecting the health and safety of our citizens by prioritizing clean air and environmental initiatives, which will ultimately benefit the health and wellbeing of all Burlingtonians.

I strongly believe that Burlington has the potential and the opportunity to be a leader in environmental and clean air initiatives, and be a role model for other cities to follow.

We need to be more proactive and strategic in all climate strategies. Policies, bylaws and rules are not motivating action on climate. We need vision and environmental stewardship education to inspire staff and citizens to 'be the pollution solution.'

THE PLATFORM :

Climate & Air Quality

ADVANCING SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY (Electric Buses & Free)

  • Electric buses ASAP with free transit as a clean value-added service for citizens and visitors to enjoy our City; thereby reducing traffic congestion and pollution

  • Safer bike lanes and connections for cyclist and scooter commuters. Free transit hopping helps!

  • De-weed pathways to make safer for rollerblading and scooter-commuter use

BETTER PARKS, EVENTS & EXPERIENCES

  • More workout stations in parks (like in B.C.)

  • Double the amount of community vegetable gardens in our city parks. Encourage condo corporatioons to build community vegetable gardens for their tenants

  • 1000 trees project

  • More picnic tables and benches in shady park locations for residents to enjoy

  • Better maintained parks & boulevards (with less weeds!)

  • More FUN events & more festivals

ACTIVE CLIMATE ACTION

  • Idle free City… starting with all City vehicles… do what your City bumper sticker already says and 'turn off your engines' when parked! Finally!

  • Climate Emergency Declaration version 2.0 - we mean it this time! Find a way! Make it happen! No excuses.

  • City Climate Action Plan becomes an actionable ‘to do” list (Let's act on it, instead of talking about it).

  • Emergency Preparedness at a community level and City-wide level.

  • Make solving climate a positive experience - inspiring, not forcing people to be more ‘green’. Let's inspire and be non-judgemental and lead by example.

  • Transition all City vehicles to hybrid or electric FASTER

  • Idle-free city program, starting with all City vehicles and then engaging citizens to do the same

Living Cities with Smart Development

SMARTER DEVELOPMENT WHILE PROTECTING GREENSPACE

  • Partner with developers to build ‘ultra-green’ development while building up and down, saving our precious greenspace.

  • Accelerate and assist residents with electric vehicle adoption.

  • Promote alternatives to gas and fossil fuel use, such as transitioning to electric stoves, heaters, ground-source heating and air conditioning, moving to solar micro-grids that provide efficient local energy in a distributed local network. Let's move towards new homes being built 100% electric with no natural gas, with ground-source heating and cooling, solar water heaters and pre-wired for electric car charging.

  • There will be a huge demand for jobs in green development and construction. We need to encourage youth to get into trades in this growing green economy. We will be building green condos, homes and converting basements to rentable units to help with our housing crisis.

Transparency & Efficiencies

THE 3 T's: TRUTH, TRANSPARENCY & TRUST

  • Admit where we are making mistakes! ….then fix them!

  • Reduce bureaucratic excuses and blame games.

  • Greater transparency through easy to understand, easy to track layman’s summaries of reports (ex. 1 page executive summary in layman’s terms to make it easy for citizens to stay abreast of relevant issues)

  • Encourage citizen engagement

  • Empathy driven complaints department to handle citizen concerns and complaints to reduce citizen frustration with City Hall

STREAMLINE & IMPROVE CITY EFFICIENCIES

  • Less bureaucracy. Less roadblocks. Run the City like a business!

  • Refocus the mayor’s role to a visonary with a focus on future opportunities.

  • 'Future Leaders Now Program': mentoring young, tech-savy, ambitious City employees that can transition into management roles and be future leaders (long term succession planning)

  • Create a City app with interactive events listings with the ability to access City services and make requests

  • Find/Search out savings. Mayor recognition reward for staff to incentivize finding efficiencies and taxpayer cost savings

RE-INVENTING DEPARTMENTS, SUCH AS BYLAW BECOMING 'COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT OFFICERS'

  • Less punitive and more public education and awareness

  • First ticket compassionate "I won't do it again" amnesty for idling offenses within 7 days.

  • Develop an educational ‘Citizen’s users manual’ to inform residents about City services and homeowner ‘tips and opportunities

BETTER SUPPORT FOR LOCAL BUSINESS

  • Shop Burlington initiatives

  • Foster Entrepreneurship

  • Help businesses 'future-hire' youth by posting a ‘Job needs of the future,” so secondary school students can wisely choose post-secondary programs based on future job opportunities

  • Engage businesses to find green solutions and cost savings.

  • Promote Burlington abroad.
